Painful as it might seem, by now I think the writing is on the wall. Like removable batteries in smartphones, the 3.5mm jack is on its way out. Like most of you out there, I am upset. It’s been what, 2 years now since the first phones without headphone jacks popped up? I have used a few too many devices since then. With every single one of them, I pick it up for the first time hoping it still has the port and luckily most of them still do. This got me thinking, why are we so attached to these ports? Much as I have the port on my phone, I don’t remember the last time I actually used it. Am I a hoarder? I think not. See, for most of us, the fact that the current workarounds look a little too cumbersome is the main cause for our hesitation. I mean, personally, I’m not ready for the dongle-life. The convinience of plugging in your phone while jamming to your favourite tunes is something a lot of us aren’t willing to give up just like that. I know you’re thinking, “But thats why we have bluetooth headphone!’. And to you I say, I am not ready to start having to worry about an extra charger, or charging one more device, and my headphones dying on me during my morning run.
FM Radio, that is the real reason
We can be as stubborn as we want with this issue but what that really says about us is we are resistant to change. The world of tech moves so fast and there are so many affordable bluetooth headphones to suit every kind of user out there. We need to let the 3.5mm audi jack die to pave way for better quality wireless music. There is a solution or workaround for most of us, all except one lot; diehard FM Radio fans. If there is a group of people that will really have a hard time hoping onto the dongle-life/bluetooth audio hype, it is these guys. I mean, manufacturers started shipping phones without FM Radio as far back as 2015. FM Radio needs a wired connection (the headphone in this case) to act as the antennae. Without this, radio fans will have to resort to alternative methods to tune in to their favourite shows. There are a number of ways to tunein to your favorite radio station online. Most Radio stations have websites that offer users options to stream live on their browsers. Other than that, there are a lot of online catalogues for radio stations from all over the world.
